What's in a Name?
In 1615, French explorer Samuel de Champlain became the first European to describe his encounter with a Great Lake. When he came to the shore of Lake Huron, he was astounded by what he found. A vast body of water extending as far as the eye can see, with rolling waves and a strong sea breeze. It was an sea, but surprisingly, it was not salty. Using the European term for fresh water, he called it “la mer douce” - The Sweetwater Sea.
At the Sweetwater Sea Bed and Breakfast, we pride ourselves on offering you the opportunity to wake up each morning to our awesome view of Lake Huron and share the amazement felt by de Champlain. Between our patio and Sauble Beach, Ontario, directly East, stands just over 100 miles of sweet water.
